McLean Museum and Art Gallery

One of the best small municipal museums in
Scotland with displays on local history, James
Watt, ship engines and models, natural history
and an excellent fine art collection. Regularly
changing temporary exhibitions and attractive
museum shop.
McLean Museum & Art Gallery

Within the same complex as the McLean is the Watt Library which houses Inverclyde's archives and local history
collection. This is an excellent resource for people researching ship building on the lower Clyde or, for those
whose ancestors came from this part of Renfrewshire, tracing their family routes. There is a collection of local
papers dating from the first decade of the 19th century, Post Office Directories, Statistical Returns and town
plans and old photographs.

Also housed within the Watt Library is the Burns Room where Greenock Burns Club, the original Burns
appreciation society, keeps its archives. Access to the room has to be arranged though the club librarian, J

The Watt Library

The Watt Library is the main centre for local studies in Inverclyde. It has many sources available to researchers in family history and in the
history of the Inverclyde area. A grade A listed part of Inverclyde's heritage itself, the library has been collecting local studies material since
1838 and is a unique resource with an unrivalled collection of material relating to Inverclyde.

In addition to books, original sources and reference material, the library is fully equipped with modern technology in a computer learning
centre, free wi-fi, public access computers, copying facilities and microfilm readers. There is also free access to Ancestry.com as well. The
library has friendly, knowledgable staff who are happy to help and guide those working on family history research or researching Inverclyde's
rich history to explore the resources at the Watt Library.
